Rent Me Fast
Fair Housing
Every home advertised on Rent Me Fast is expected to be available to everyone the law protects.
The law
The federal Fair Housing Act makes it illegal to discriminate in renting a home, or to advertise a preference or limit, because of race, color, religion, sex, national origin, disability or familial status (having children under 18 in the home, or being pregnant).
Ohio law also covers ancestry and military status. Many cities and counties add more protections, so owners should check the rules where the home is.
What this means for listings
- Describe the home, not the person you hope will live in it.
- Do not state or hint at a preference about who may live there, such as adults only, no children, or a particular faith or background.
- An assistance animal is not a pet. A no-pets rule does not settle a request for one.
- Exceptions in the law are narrow. If you think one applies to you, ask a lawyer before you write it in a listing.
What we do
We read new listings, and our system flags wording that often causes problems. We may ask an owner to change a listing, or take it down. A listing being on this site does not mean we have reviewed it for legal compliance, and the owner is responsible for it.
If you believe you were discriminated against
You can file a complaint at no cost with the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development at hud.gov or 1-800-669-9777. In Ohio you can also contact the Ohio Civil Rights Commission. Please also use the Report this listing link so that we can review the listing.
